Gandhi Biography
Mahatma Gandhi is known for leading and inspiring India to independence. Not just in India, but around the world Gandhi inspired movements and civil-rights. He believed and encouraged disobedience against the British, but only in non-violent ways. He helped fight for the rights of Muslims and Hindus in South Africa by using his own techniques and teaching them to others. Gandhi led many other campaigns like easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic relations, and increasing economic self-dependence.
Gandhi became a key leader in India, and spoke for the best interest of the people of India. He traveled all over India so he could see the diversity and discover the true India. He saw the villages as the core of India and promoted the true India throughout all his battles against the British. For example, even though he was part of the middle class, Gandhi often did the work of an untouchable to prove that he did not have superiority over them. Gandhi didn't believe in the separation of the untouchables from the rest of the society. He led several movements to try to rid untouchability from the caste system in order for equality. Gandhi also led Indians in a national march for salt in 1930 as a way of protesting. Due to protesting throughout his life, Gandhi was imprisoned multiple times due to political offenses. He sought to practice non-violence and truth in all situations at all costs, and believed that others do the same.
In his last year, Gandhi worked to stop the hostility between Muslims and Hindus, by fasting for weeks. Even though his health seriously declined, he didn't discontinue his fasting until the violence between the two stopped. He was assassinated on January 30 1948 by Nathuram Godse, who thought Gandhi was too sympathetic to India's Muslims, rather than Hindus. There are several holidays based on Gandhi such as Martyr’s Day, Gandhi Jayanti, and the world-wide International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi's philosophy changed and inspired the world and the lives of many. He lived by his beliefs everyday and stated, "When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall. Think of it. Always"
